Resume & Cover Letter Writing Workshop Career Services Presentation October 17 2013 Rebecca Leaman careers@mta.ca www.mta.ca/careers
Why? • Summer, internship & job searching • Grad schools • LinkedIn & other social media
Target your resume • Analyze each point listed in the job description • Check out key components: qualifications, experience required, “soft skills”, the job itself, term, company environment, etc. • Pull out key words – “power words” – and use them in your application • Reference their key criteria in your cover letter and/or resume
Cover Letter Writing • Important hints: • Research the company – make sure you understand their values and goals. Make allusions to them in your cover letter. • Be clear and concise. Don’t use language which is too formal. • Be passionate and keen. Show that you really want the position and that you are the best for the job. • Make it targeted. Never send a form letter.
Resume (CV) Writing Major Sections: • Personal Profile • Career or Job Objective • Summary of Qualifications or Skills Summary • Education • Relevant Assignments • Relevant Courses • Work Experience • Volunteer Experience • Activities and Interests • Awards and Scholarships • Computer Proficiency • Laboratory Skills, Technical Skills, Scientific Instrumentation • Languages • Licensure • Certifications • Professional Memberships • Publications • References
Resume (CV) Writing • Important things to include – keywords, skills list, accomplishments (not just a job description) • Important things to keep off – references (unless requested), age, photo, personal details • Formatting Recommendations: • Use a standardized font • Keep the important RELEVANT info at the top • Page rules are more flexible – 2 pages
