  1. Winds Chapter 16 Section 3

  2. What is wind? • Horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure • Caused by differences in air pressure • Most differences are caused by unequal heating in the atmosphere

  3. What is wind? • Air over a heated surface becomes less dense and air pressure decreases • Dense air from a nearby cooler area with higher pressure will move in and force warm air to rise

  4. Measuring Wind • Described by speed and direction • A wind vane indicates direction • An anemometer indicates speed

  5. Wind Chill Factor • How cold it feels due to the wind • Wind removes body heat thus feeling colder

  6. Local Winds • Winds caused by unequal heating in a small area • Sea Breeze – blows from a lake or ocean • Land breeze – flows from land to a lake or ocean

  7. Global Winds Polar Easterlies Prevailing Westerlies Horse Latitudes NE Trade Winds Equatorial Doldrums SE Trade Winds Prevailing Westerlies Polar Easterlies
