  5. SMR 8 • The aim of this requirement is to maintain a system for the Identification and Registration of Sheep and Goats in order facilitate their traceability

National Sheep Identification System (N.S.I.S) . • Registration: • Flock owners must register with their local District Veterinary Office (D.V.O.) • Identification: • All sheep require being tagged by 9 months of age or earlier if leaving the holding An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara │ Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

N.S.I.S Cont’d • Movement • Sheep moving off the holding must be accompanied by a Dispatch Docket and flock-owners should ensure that they receive a dispatch docket when sheep move onto the holding. • When sheep are sold through a Mart /Meat plant that movement is recorded on the Animal Movement and Identification System (A.I.M) • Farm to Farm movements – the Purchaser is responsible for returning the Dispatch Docket to the District Veterinary Office within 7 days. N.S.I.S Cont’d • Record Keeping • Flock owners must maintain an up to date Flock Register and retain records including Dispatch Dockets of sheep moved on and off the holding for 3 years. • Census • Flock owners must complete and return an annual census inventory to DAFM and record the detail in the Flock Register.

Tagging Requirements From 01 June 2019 • Sheep under 12 months of age when moving direct to slaughter at minimum must be tagged with an EID tag in the right ear • All sheep including lambs going to marts, other farms or shows must be tagged with an EID tag set or with and EID bolus set consisting of a blue tag on the left ear matched with a ruminal bolus.   11. Tagging Requirements From the 1st June 2019 • EID Tag Set –Yellow • Mandatory for all other sheep • EID Bolus Set – Blue Tag • Can be used as an alternative to an EID Tag

  15. Three Main Tag Types • Single Yellow EID Slaughter Tag: Lambs under 12 months of age going direct from birth holding to slaughter. Applied to right ear. • Yellow EID Tag Set. EID tag in right ear. Visual tag in left ear. • Electronic Bolus Set: Visual Tag (Left Ear) + An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara │ Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Inspections • 3% of flocks, accounting of 5% of the sheep population • Notification up to 48 hours • Objective; to ensure that all the requirements have been complied with in relation to: • Tagging • Database/Census • Dispatch Dockets • Flock Register An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara │ Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Inspections • All sheep must be penned (not portion of the flock) and the Flock Register and Dispatch Dockets must be available for inspection • A full flock count is taken and this in turn reconciled with the last sheep census return • The Inspecting Officer will check that the sheep are properly tagged and will record the number non compliant with tagging

  18. Inspections Cont’d • Check for: • A sample of tag numbers from the penned flock and then checks that they are correctly recorded in the flock register. This is to verify that the Flock Register is correct and up to date. • A sample of dispatch dockets from the previous 3 years (max of 8) to see if they correctly recorded in the flock register An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara │ Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Inspections Cont’d • Check for: • To see if the Census details for the three previous years have been correctly recorded in the Ovine Flock Register • Movements on and off the farm are properly are notified to the Database.   22. Caprines / Goats • Double tagged from 6mts • Electronic tagging- optional except when being exported • Must use Approved Tags (Green) • Re-placement tags must also be green • Maintain Register and Retain Dispatch Dockets

Summary • Flock owners must register with their D.V.O • Ensure sheep – 9 mts tagged; goats - 6 mts • Replace lost tags immediately • Keep the Flock Register updated • Dispatch Dockets must be completed for all movements off the holding and retained for 3 years • Farm to Farm movements notified to D.V.O by purchaser
