March 15, 2018 • Do Now: What should you do if you or someone you care about is in an unhealthy relationship? • Obj: LWDAT discuss the dangers of dating abuse or rape
March 16, 2018 • Do Now: What system is responsible for puberty in a changing boy or girl? What are some of these changes? • Obj: LWDAT understand what the endocrine system, its parts and how the endocrine system controls changes in the body.
Read and take notes on chapter 16 lessons 7 & 8 on the endocrine & reproductive systems. Then tell me what are the main parts and functions of the male and female reproductive systems.
Endocrine System • Endocrine System • Chemical communication system that controls many body functions (system of glands throughout the body that regulate body functions) • Are the same for males & females except for the sex gland • Females: ovaries • Males: testes • Gland: group of cell or an organ that secretes a substance
Pituitary gland: “master gland” • Controls other endocrine glands • Makes many different hormones • One starts growth spurt • One causes sex glands to mature • When mature they begin to make and release sex hormones • Hormones: • Chemical substances produced in certain glands that help to regulate the way your body functions
Problems • Diabetes • Type 1: pancreas cannot produce enough insulin • Type 2: body cannot use the insulin it produces properly • Thyroid Diseases • Overactive: include swelling in the front of the neck, nervousness & weight loss • Underactive: tiredness, depression, weight gain & muscle & joint pain • Pituitary Gland Problems (Growth) • Too much: very tall person • Too little: very small person
Endocrine System • Pituitary gland: located at the base of the brain • Secretes several hormones that regulate the thyroid, adrenal glands and kidneys as well as growth & development • Parathyroid: • Regulates distribution of certain minerals • Pancreas • Supplies SI w/ digestive juices • Islands/Islets of Langerhans: controls blood sugar levels • Thyroid: • Regulates the chemical reaction of nutrients in the cells (largest gland in the system) • Adrenal glands: • Maintain levels of sodium & water, aids the digestive process & controls the body’s response in emergencies • Sex glands: (ovaries & testes) • Reproductive glands that controls development of secondary sex characteristics during adolescence
March 23, 2018 • Do Now: In at least 2 sentences, tell me what you know about the male & female reproductive systems (1 sentence per system). • Obj: LWDAT identify the main parts of the male reproductive system and some problems that may happen to the male. • Quiz on Monday 3/26
Reproductive System • The body system containing the organs that make producing offspring possible
Male Reproductive System Flow of Sperm: Testicles: begin to make sperm during puberty Epididymis: organ where sperm mature Vas Deferens: 2 long tubes connecting epididymis and prostate gland (where sperm are stored) Seminal vesicles: 2 glands that give off fluid containing nutrients
Male Reproductive System Flow of Sperm: Seminal vesicles: 2 glands that give off fluid containing nutrients Prostate gland: gives off fluid into tube (large gland surrounding the male urethra in front of the bladder) Cowper’s gland: gives off fluid Urethra: tube through which both semen and urine leave the male body From prostate gland through the penis
Male Reproductive System • Male Reproductive Gland: Testes • Male Hormone: Testosterone • Male Sex Cell: Sperm • When Sperm plus the fluids from the seminal vesicles, the prostate gland and cowper’s gland: Semen • Semen exits the penis during forceful muscular contractions: Ejaculation
Problems w/ Male system • Injury to the testes • Cancer • Hernia: when an internal organ pushes against or through a surrounding cavity wall • STD • Sterility: not being able to have children
