IRU CommitmentRoad Safety – Highest Priority The IRU supports all measures that improve road safety if they effectively target the main causes of accidents involving professional vehicles (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
ETAC – A Scientific Study • Over 2 years, expert teams investigated on sitemore than 600 accidents involving trucks. • Investigations were based on a scientific, widely accepted and internationally benchmarked methodology. ETAC – First of its kind! (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
ETAC Study - Methodology • Experts cooperate with emergency services. • Expert teams check selection criteria: • - the accident involves at least one truck (over 3.5t) • - the accident resulted in at least one injured person • Investigation and data collection • Data analysis and data verification • Accident reconstruction (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
ETAC Study – Data Base • Describe the accident causation sequence • Reconstruct thepre-collision phases • Identify critical situations • Analyse malfunctions • Categorise accident types Identify the main causes of accidents involving trucks (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
Accident 7,4% Single truck Truck and other road user (vehicles and/or pedestrian) 27.0% Accident at intersection 20.6% Accident in queue 19.5% Accident due to lane departure 11.3% Accident after an overtaking manoeuvre Accident Categories (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
Main Cause: The Human Factor 624 accidents showed the main cause of the accident is human error. However, from the 85.2% linked to human error, 75% were caused by other road users! Source: EU, IRU (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010

Results • Since 2000 the number of people killed or injured on European roads has been reduced by 25% while the number of km driven by trucks increased by 20% • Professional driver qualification is mandatory and implemented from September 2008/2009 for bus/coach and truck drivers (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
Conclusions & next steps Other programmes & initiatives specifically targeting road safety are on developed by the IRU Academy. Road Safety is global and we shall maximise knowledge transfer to all regions, including into the countries of the League of Arab States. Studies and research related to improving road safety focused on LAS countries such as those indentifying the main cause of accidents involving commercial vehicles shall be conducted. The number of certified professionals in the sector should increase globally and could be used as a tangible objective. (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2010
