Reflection on family Ephesians 5-6
Ephesians 5:15 BE CAREFUL HOW YOU LIVE, NOT AS UNWISE BUT AS WISE Be very careful, then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise
Ephesians 5:16 MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY Making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:21 EVERYONE MUST SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER OUT OF REVERENCE FOR CHRIST Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ
Ephesians 5:22 WIVES SUBMIT TO YOUR HUSBANDS Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord
Submission is an attitude that says, 'I delight for you to take the initiative in our family. I am glad when you take responsibility for things and lead with love. I don't flourish when you are passive and I have to make sure the family works.' But the attitude of Christian submission also says, 'It grieves me when you venture into sinful acts and want to take me with you. You know I can't do that. I have no desire to resist you. On the contrary, I flourish most when I can respond creatively and joyfully to your lead; but I can't follow you into sin, as much as I love to honor your leadership in our marriage. Christ is my King.’”
Ephesians 5:23 HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior
The husband is the head of the wife just in so far as he is to her what Christ is to the Church - read on - and give his life for her (Eph. V, 25). This headship, then, is most fully embodied not in the husband we should all wish to be but in him whose marriage is most like a crucifixion; whose wife receives most and gives least, is most unworthy of him, is - in her own mere nature - least lovable. For the Church has not beauty but what the Bride-groom gives her; he does not find, but makes her, lovely.
The chrism of this terrible coronation is to be seen not in the joys of any man's marriage but in its sorrows, in the sickness and sufferings of a good wife or the faults of a bad one, in his unwearying (never paraded) care or his inexhaustible forgiveness: forgiveness, not acquiescence. As Christ sees in the flawed, proud, fanatical or lukewarm Church on earth that Bride who will one day be without spot or wrinkle, and labours to produce the latter, so the husband whose headship is Christ-like (and he is allowed no other sort) never despairs
Ephesians 6:1 CHILDREN OBEY YOUR PARENTS Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Ephesians 6:2 EVERYONE, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise
Ephesians 6:4 FATHERS DO NOT EXASPERATE YOUR CHILDREN Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
