Earth Observing Satellites UpdateJohn Murray, NASA Langley Research Center NASA Aviation Weather Satellites Last Year NASA’s AURA satellite, the chemistry component of the A-Train, with the Ozone Mapping Instrument (OMI) will replace TOMS for volcanic ash aerosol and gas detection. NASA ASAP research plus separate, recent NASA Science Mission Directorate solicitations for AURA and Earth Science will expand our ability to develop integrated volcanic ash tools. NASA Aviation Weather Satellites This Year and Out The NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) satellite with the Cross-track Interferometer Sounder CrIS will provide the first true hyperspectral, I.e., high vertical resolution atmospheric temperature and water vapor profiles. NPOESS to follow in FY07. The A-Train is led by Aqua with MODIS and AIRS, deployed in FY02, and CALIPSO with cloud LIDAR, Cloudsat with passive MW, PARASOL with the Polder polarizing Imager and AURA follow.

Earth Observing Satellites Update NASA Aviation Weather Satellite Applications Last Year NASA ASAP began validation of cloud microphysical products from GOES, AVHRR and MODIS visual channels. Cloud phase product IV&V and benchmark completed. NASA Aviation Weather Satellite Applications This Year NASA ASAP continue validation of cloud microphysical products from GOES, AVHRR and MODIS visual channels. Effective cloud height, droplet diameter, liquid water (I.e., droplet concentration) and overall in-flight icing risk to be benchmarked. CIP to integrate high efficacy products. Research on satellite cloud microphysical properties assimilation into RUC to begin.
Earth Observing Satellites Update NASA Aviation Weather Satellite Applications Last Year NASA Advanced Satellite Aviation-weather Products (ASAP) demonstrated the ability to advect GOES convective initiation fields up to 40 minutes into the future (validated w/ radar), JAS article passed review and is pending publication. NASA Aviation Weather Satellite Applications This Year NASA ASAP to focus convective initiation identification and advection research on oceanic convection and to conduct research related to the development of the Oceanic Convective Weather Forecast and Global Turbulence Graphic Products.
