  2. Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 11–7) Main Idea and Vocabulary Key Concept: Metric Units of Length Example 1: Select an Appropriate Unit Example 2: Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units Example 3: Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units Metric Rulers Lesson Menu

  3. I will choose an appropriate metric unit for measuring length and convert metric units of length. • metric system • centimeter • millimeter • meter • kilometer Main Idea/Vocabulary

  4. KC 1

  5. Select an Appropriate Unit Which unit would you use to measure the height of a street light pole: millimeter, centimeter, meter, or kilometer? The height of a street light pole is much greater than the width of a pinky finger but much smaller than 6 city blocks. Answer: So, a meter is an appropriate unit of measure. Example 1

  6. A B C C Which unit would you use to measure the width of a text book? • millimeter • centimeter • meter • kilometer Example 1

  7. Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units An art project required strips of paper 8 centimeters long. How many millimeters long is each strip? Example 2

  8. 8 cm = mm Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units You need to convert 8 centimeters to millimeters. A larger unit (cm) is being converted to a smaller unit (mm), so you will multiply. 8 × 10 = 80 Since 1 cm = 10 mm, multiply 8 by 10. Answer: So, 8 cm = 80 mm. The art project required strips of paper 80 millimeters long. Example 2

  9. A B C D Convert 5 meters to centimeters. • 5 cm • 50 cm • 500 cm • 5,000 cm Example 2

  10. Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units A high school track measures 250 meters. Luis ran 12 times around the track. How many kilometers did he run? Step 1 Find the length in meters. number of laps length of one lap total length 12 × 250 m = 3,000 m Example 3

  11. 3,000 m = km Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units Step 2 Convert 3,000 meters to kilometers. A smaller unit (m) is being converted to a larger unit (km), so you will divide. 3,000 ÷ 1,000 = 3 Since 1,000 m = 1 km, divide 3,000 by 1,000. Answer: So, 3,000 m = 3 km. Luis ran 3 kilometers total around the high school track. Example 3

  12. A B C D Convert 70 millimeters to centimeters. • 7 cm • 70 cm • 700 cm • 7,000 cm Example 3
