  3. What’s the Big Deal About Data? • Data leads to information • Information leads to decisions • Decisions affect people’s lives • Ergo: • Data affects people’s live

  4. Don’t Get Caught in the Trees when in a Forest of Data Ask yourself – How Will the Data Be Used? • I need a simple number • to answer a question? • I need to understand the playing field • for planning a program? • I need to convince someone • that a program is needed • or not not needed?

  5. Choose your data wisely Data can….. • drive decisions • support decisions • defend decisions • discredit decisions Don’t believe what you see But believe in what you use

  6. Data is complex • Dimensional – time, geography • Visual –tabular, map, infographic, chart, graph • Validity – source, methodology • Defensible - metadata

  7. That being said….. “Jeopardy” contestants become Champions because…….. • They’re first on the buzzer They retrieve information quickly They answer the question correctly- in the form of a question
