Welcome! NEW CARDINALS ON THE BLOCK SEPTEMBER 23, 2013
AGENDA • CELEBRATIONS • ANNOUNCEMENTS/TIDBITS TO HELP • EVALUATION UPDATES • REFLECTION
INTRODUCTIONS • PROUD PRINCIPAL
HINTS TO HELP YOU HAVE A SUCCESSFUL START: • Make/Finish making your positive contacts for each student • Be the first to share the story. • The most reliable communication is adult-to-adult; voice-to-voice. • Create your own image/beliefs. • When in doubt ASK…it helps • Don’t be afraid to make suggestions or to ask questions. • Set goals, measure progress, and celebrate growth.
Open House Hints: • Have every family sign-in (you’ll need to turn that in for Title I) • Provide some literature in written form to take away (what do you need everyone to know and remember). • Use this opportunity to go over protocol/procedures for homework, school-to-home communication, best ways to reach you, where parents can find out more about your class, how to get homework help, and parent responsibilities—ie., signing folders, signing agendas, etc.) • Include resources that will allow parents to help their students (website, IXL, Starfall, other websites) • Have a place for parents to sign-up for conferences if they want to talk with you. You can also tell them you will be conferencing with all parents in the last 2 weeks of October –the end of the quarter. • Showcase student work/samples.
Open House Hints: • Make sure your room represents a safe, orderly learning environment. Many of you have such great themes, bulletin boards, word walls, and learner cues in your classroom. Check out your colleagues rooms for other essentials. • You must have student work displayed outside of your classroom with a learner statement or “The students learned…” sentence that includes the objective (in parentheses is fine). • Whatever you give out on Thursday, you should be prepared to send home on the following Tuesday to non-attendees. • Offer incentives for students coming with their parents (DoJo points, Cardinal Cash, etc.) to value their participation.
