  1. DHS MSC Countdown 2014 Prepared by Vishnu, Brian, & Keerthana

  2. Rules There will be 84 questions, alternating from math to science. There will also be an approximately equal distribution of biology, chemistry, and physics in the science questions. 45 seconds are allowed to answer each question. Each pair will answer 3 questions. In case the team to buzz in first gets the answer wrong, the right to answer go to his opponent. In case no one gets it right, the audience can answer and no one gets the point.

  3. Question 1 Math How many positive integral divisors does 128 have?

  4. Answer - Q1 8 (divisors)

  5. Question 2 Biology What is the name for the condition of dynamic equilibrium attained by a living body?

  6. Answer - Q2 Homeostasis

  7. Question 3 Math What is the units digit of 3^7821 ?

  8. Answer - Q3 3

  9. Question 4 Chemistry What is the name for the reaction that creates ammonia from its elemental forms?

  10. Answer - Q4 Haber Process

  11. Question 5 Math The complement of angle M is 10 degrees. What is its supplement?

  12. Answer - Q5 100 (degrees)

  13. Question 6 Physics If a 2 kg ball travels at 50 m/s towards a wall and rebounds off it elastically after being in contact with the wall for .2 seconds, how much force did the wall exert on the ball?

  14. Answer - Q6 1000 N

  15. Question 7 Math Brian has 4 blue socks and 6 green socks in a drawer. What is the least number of socks he must draw, at random, to guarantee having at least 2 of the same color?

  16. Answer - Q7 3 (socks)

  17. Question 8 Biology If a black cow and a white cow produce offspring with a solid grey coloration, what is the form of genetic inheritance?

  18. Answer - Q8 Incomplete Dominance

  19. Question 9 Math In the land of Ink, the money system is unique. One Trinket is equal to 4 Blinkets, and 3 Blinkets are equal to 7 Drinkets. In Trinkets, what is the value of 56 Drinkets?

  20. Answer - Q9 6 (trinkets)

  21. Question 10 Chemistry A container holds 392 grams of N2 (molar mass = 28 g/mol), 480 grams of O2 (molar mass = 32 g/mol), and no other gases. Assuming that N2 and O2 exhibit ideal behavior, if the total pressure in the container 580 torr, what is the partial pressure of the oxygen?

  22. Answer - Q10 300 torr

  23. Question 11 Math An integer is tripled, then divided by 2 and then reduced by 1. If the result is 11, what was the original integer?

  24. Answer - Q11 8

  25. Question 12 Physics What equation gives the quantities of pressure, temperature, volume and number of moles for a gas that experiences no attractive forces within itself?

  26. Answer - Q12 Ideal Gas Law

  27. Question 13 Math Michelle started a stamp collection. She collected 8 stamps the first day. Each subsequent day she collected 8 more stamps than she had collected the previous day. If she collected stamps for 5 consecutive days, how many stamps did she collect in total after 5 days?
