Split the middle term… 2 • x2 + 3x + 2 • I break 3x up into 1x and 2x • x2 + 1x + 2x + 2 • x(x + 1) + (x + 1) x2 + 3x + 2 I break 3x up into 1x and 2x x2 + 1x + 2x + 2 x(x + 1) • + 2 • (x + 1)(x + 2) • (x + 1) (x + 1) 2 1 3 • Factor first two terms • “Force” factor the second two terms (Front ½ mirrors Back ½) • Check middle GCF • Factor!
