There are four types of stem-changing verbs. e ie e i o ue u ue Stem-changing verbs
Stem-changing verbs are a verbs that undergo two separate changes during conjugation. The first change, you already know. You drop the ending (last two letters and replace with the appropriate regular ending based on the subject) The second change is made to the stem. What are Stem-changing verbs?
Remember, there are three types of verbs: -ar, -er, -ir. • The stem is the part that is left when you get rid of the ar, ir, or er in order to conjugate. • Example (the blue letters represent the “stem”: Stemending caminar What do you mean by stem?
Let’s take a verb from the e ie verb group. • Querer(to want) • Let’s conjugate pensar in the “yo” form • 1) drop the “er” and replace it with “o.” • 2) replace te “e” from the stem with “ie.” • Result = Quiero how do we conjugate this type of verbs?
If the stem has to vowels, change the last one only. Leave the first “e” unchanged. • preferir = yoprefiero • The only exception for the stem-change verbs is the “nosotros” and “vosotros” for, which remains unchanged. In other words treat these forms as a regular er, ir, ar. (No stem change) Note:

Let’s take a verb from the u ue verb group. • Jugar(to think) • Let’s conjugate “jugar” in the “usted” form • 1) drop the “ar” and replace it with “a.” • 2) replace the “u” from the stem with “ue.” • Result = Juega how do we conjugate this type of verbs?
