RIVER STRUMICA Is main recipient in Strumica Municipality , it watershed encompasses the southeastern part of Macedonia, and one part goes in Bulgaria.It is right tributary of the river Struma.It springs from Plackovica Mountain.The quality of the water is monitored in Novo Selo located before the Bulgarian border. Assessment of water quality • Is done based on the Macedonian regulation for classification of waterandcomparing the monitoring data for chemical and biological parameters for the period 1999-2009, • Samples of water are analyzed for physical-chemical parameters-temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, alkalinity, TSS, COD, BOD, DO, hardness, Cl-, SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca2+,Mg2+) • concentration of nutrients (NO3-N,NO2-N,NH4,P-PO4), • concentration of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni). • Biological parameters (saprobic index, saprobity)

  4. HOW ARE DETERMINED PARAMETERS OF WATER? Monthly sampling in Novo Selo for physical-chemical parameters and five times in a year for biological parametersOn the field are measured temperature, pH, conductivity, DO, saturation,alkalinity. Some parameters are determined by titration, nutrients are determined by spectrophotometry.Heavy metals concentration of Na, K, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cu are determined by atomic absorption spectrometry by graphite furnace and flame technique. Saprobic index by Pantle and Buck.Methods used for detremination are methods recommended by Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater APHA, EPA, and EN/ISO methods.

  5. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONChemical parameters

  6. Most of the physico-chemical parameters indicated 2nd and 3rd class of water quality

  7. The most critical parameters during this period was nutrients level and BOD5 indicating 4th and 5th class of water quality. The main sources of pollution are fertilizers, failing septic systems,wastewater treatment plant discharges, and farm animals. Heavy metals concentration indicate first and second-class of water quality only the concentration of cadmium and manganese in some cases is higher indicating 3rd and 4th class of water quality

  8. Biological parameters • Saprobic index indicate 2nd and 3rd class of water quality • saprobity-Meso saprobic βms–αms and Meso saprobic αms – βms.

CONCLUSIONS • Most of the physico-chemical parameters indicate 2nd and 3rd class of water quality • The most critical parameters during this period was nutrients level and BOD5 indicating 4th and 5th class of water quality. • Heavy metals indicate 1st and 2nd class of water quality only the concentration of cadmium and manganese in some cases is higher indicating 3rd and 4th class of water quality • Saprobic index indicate 2nd and 3rd class of water quality
