  1. WLTP-DTP-LabProcICE-170 Aerodynamics & WLTP EG-64, Winkelmann 14.11.2012 Excerpt EADE 2012

  2. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics Cycle andthe test procedure – aerodynamicconsideration. • Current proposal (EU Com., Audi): Aerodyn. worst case All what leads to a higher drag Aero CO2 Individual values for each option Bandwidthof individual vehicle CO2 Aerodyn. best case (on WC tire) TM CO2 Aerodyn. best case, (on WC tire) TM mass TML TMH Holger Winkelmann, EG-64

  3. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics First conclusions • Physics: In TMH und TML moveable parts are integrated. So this proposal is mixing up weight and aerodynamics too.  Where is the physical relation between the weight of optional equipment and the position of a moveable aerodynamic-part? • Effort: Significantincreaseofwindtunnel (WT)-measurementsistobeexpected, ifitisrequired, todeterminate a complexmatrixof different optionswiththeir individual aerodynamicinfluenceforeach individual car. Additionallyforthe 3rd point a RLD und dyno-test hastobeperformed. • Interactions: There are interactions between the aerodynamic options, which not allow to simply add the influence of the aerodynamic drag. • best-case? The main influence comes from rims, tyre-profile and wheel-dimension, but the dimension is fixed due to the tyre-choice! So the best-case aerodynamic is not really a best case - it is not measureable. How to calculate then the influence of optional equipment like rims? WLTP Annex 4 aerodynamics, BMW, EG-63, 14.11.2012

  4. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics Options andactivesystemswitheffects on aerodynamic. Holger Winkelmann, EG-64

  5. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics Effects on aerodynamicdragvalue. …necessary tests (coast down) …example-vehicle (customer) …field of possible CO2-values with wc aero CO2-Emission with „bc aero“ on wc tyres NoGo-Area, even for real cars… with „bc aero“ on wc tyres weight Individual customer car with 205 tyres and wheelcaps TML TM TMH - Due to the wc-tyre regulation (i.e. 225/255-19“), a customer car with smaller tyres on aerodynamic better rims (94% takerate) would not be counted. - Do we have to rework EADE rules?…( EADE values with WLTP tyre rule ?) - High effort for WT-test and coastdown test …. Holger Winkelmann, EG-64

  6. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics Option accordingtyreregulationforincludesmallertyres. …necessary tests (coast down) …example-vehicle (customer) …field of possible CO2-values with wc aero CO2-Emission with „bc aero“ with „bc aero“ 205 vs. 225/255 correct bc aero correct bc aero weight TML TM TMH - High effort for WT-test, coastdown test - Option to consider realistic drag values for customers who do not order widest tyres… Alternative: Skip the widest tyre rule… 205-16“; 225 – 16“; 225-17“; 225-18“, 225/255-17“; RF 225-18“; 225/255-19“ + 205-16“ – but with high rollresist. ; Holger Winkelmann, EG-64

  7. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics Alternative proposalszenario. …necessary tests (coast down) …example-vehicle (customer) …line of possible CO2-values with wc aero CO2-Emission with (1) with „bc aero“ with (1) 205 vs. 225/255 with „bc aero“ correct bc aero weight TML TM TMH Make a mix of best- and worst-case aerodynamic options. (1) Choose the rim with the highest air resistance for TMH and TML, but let all the other options out of consideration (also options, which positively influence the air resistance). • Less effort for WT-test (not more than today.) • Increase of aerodynamic best-values, typical measures for aerodynamic improovement like smaller wheels with wheelcaps without effect on CO2 values. Holger Winkelmann, EG-64

  8. WLTP Annex 4, Aerodynamics New proposalforactiveaerodynamicelements. Active aerodynamic parts Focus: Innovation for reducing drag/CO2 Focus: Driving Performance Reduction of drag Incrase of drag Reduction of drag (1) Activeaerodynamicelementswithfocusofdragreduction (i.e. grill shutter …) canbeset in itsdragimprovingposition ( bc & wc). Can beseenas a motivationtoengineermore innovativ dragreducingelements…… • (2) Active aerodynamic elements with focus on driving stability leading to higer drag must be set in it´s wc-position… (3) No consideration of active parts when influance on cd x A is < 1% or < 3% in operation.
