2. About South Africa • Southernmost country in Africa • Approx 57 million people • Urban and extreme rural areas • 11 official languages • Racial diversity • Black 79% • White 10% • Colored 9% • Asian 3%

3. Social issues in South Africa 20 years post Apartheid, yet racial divides persist • Land ownership • White South Africans own 72 percent of South Africa's land, while black South Africans, who make up 80 percent of the population, own just 4 percent.  • Health care - HIV/AIDS • Fourth highest HIV prevalence in the world • Minimal funding/access for health, particularly for those in rural areas and townships • Education for South African Black people • Most unequal system in the world (TIMSS, 2017) • Economic development and sustainability • Lack of jobs and job training for black South African

4. Stellenbosch University • Public University in Stellenbosch • Approx 29,000 students from across Africa • Department of Social work serves over 300 students • Research focus on community engagement and social development • Field placements at over 40 sites across the area • Dedicated focus on social justice and social development

5. Short course details Focus on social development and social justice • Lectures and Field site visits • UWM students will take courses from SU faculty in the morning, and apply what they learned to field sites in the afternoon • Collaborative project with SU students • UWM students will be paired with SU students to develop a project about US/SA policy and programming • UWM students will present to the SU faculty their projects • Trips to Cape Town to visit cultural heritage sites, including slave lodge and the district six museum. • Time for exploring the area on your own!

6. The context of social work and social welfare in South Africa. Taught by Dr. Lambert and will provide an overview for US students on the context of the profession in South Africa • South African welfare Policy. Taught by Dr. Khosaand will provide a more comprehensive discussion of what welfare means and how it is provided in eth South African context. • The role of community work in South Africa. Taught by Dr. Zimba, and will provide detail on the critical role of community work across the varied cultural and social landscape of South Africa. • U.S. and South Africa social policy. Co-taught by Dr. Kavanaugh (UWM) and Dr. Lambert – utilizing case examples and experiential learning for students to apply social policy across contexts. • Child protection and family preservation. Taught by Dr. Strydom, will highlight the often delicate work of maintaining family preservation with the context of abuse, neglect, disease and cultural expectations. • Cultural practices. Taught by Dr. Zimba, provides detail on the varied cultural practices and field site placements in South African communities, and how the understanding of these is vital to social work practice. • Mental health and Substance abuse. taught by Dr. Slabbertprovides an overview of current metal health and substance abuse issues, practice and treatment in the South African context.
