  1. WHY CHOOSE ADDICTION THERAPY? There are a range of options available when you realize you have become addicted to a specific substance. Unfortunately it is often not possible for an addict to select the best possible care. This is because an addict will generally be thinking about where to get their next supply of the addictive substance. The ideal that they are addicted is not one which is generally considered. In fact, many addicts will not even see their addiction when loved ones tell them they are addicted and even try to help them. This is one of the reasons addiction therapy can be an essential part of the recovery process. Addiction Therapy – The Beginning Most people assume that treatment of any addiction starts with removing the addictive substance and controlling a withdrawal process. In fact, to successfully withdraw from any addiction you first need to have some addiction therapy. This can often be administered by your family and loved ones; in effect they are offering addiction therapy when they try to talk to you or prevent you from getting your next fix. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts it is common for this initial verbal appeal to fail. An untrained person does not usually know the best way to administer therapy; trying to convince you that you are addicted or have an unhealthy lifestyle is generally not an effective approach. Staged Introduction Whilst many people assume that an addict will seek their own treatment or assistance once they have reached rock bottom; this is not an accurate statement. For many people, rock bottom is death; until that point they are focused only on getting more of their addiction! Another approach to addiction therapy and often the follow on from the beginning stage, is to slowly introduce them to a therapist. A professional can allow the addict to talk and guide the conversation. Instead of focusing on getting them to accept they are an addict, they will help them to look at the situations which caused the addiction to develop. Understanding the source can allow either the therapist or the addict to start seeing how they could overcome the issue. In fact, it will allow the addict to see that they are addicted!

  2. Rehab Once the addict realizes there is a problem they will be willing to enter rehab. It is important that they do this voluntarily as this will ensure they get the most out of any program. An addict who enters rehab voluntarily is likely to be more committed and succeed. They are also more like to stay off the addiction in the long term. Rehab is where the withdrawal process is monitored and carefully controlled. Replacement drugs will ensure a smooth withdrawal. Addiction therapy will continue within the confines of the rehab clinic. The focus will be on how to deal with an addiction and how to face any past issues to avoid the same issue pushing you back to your addiction. Recovery is a long process and a good addiction therapy strategy will also include aftercare; to help ensure you do not return to your addiction.
