Why should Governments Legalize the Use Of Hemp? For those interested in botany, it is very motivating to know that from the same plant, known for its psych-active effects, two different sub-species are derived. Of course I am talking about Cannabis, perhaps one of the most controversial plants in modern societies. The curious fact is not the species’ division, but rather the difference in both of these sub-species’ effects. Marihuana and Hemp come from the same plant. However, despite their similarities, they are different in many aspects. Likewise, both are not legal in several countries, provide many benefits for human lives. For this article, the primary focus is on the hemp. For several years, knowledge about the differences between Marihuana and Hemp was very scarce. Both were used without any distinctions. Studies have shown that different levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is what distinguish both sub-species. While levels of THC in Marihuana fluctuate between 5% and 20%, in Hemp is merely a 0.3%. Also, Hemp is characterized for having another substance in greater quantities than Marihuana, the Cannabidiol (CBD). This works as an inhibitor of the psych-active effects produce by THC. Hemp is considered one of the first plants cultivated by men in ancient times. Statistically speaking, up to a 90% of all the paper produced in the XX Century was made of Hemp. Nowadays, few society activities are linked to the usage of Hemp. Yet, the plant can be used in its totality. Every inch represents an innovative and necessary utility. It would not be strange to find in commonly used products like beer, detergents, or even in our snacks, some traces of this plant. To be honest, it can be anywhere. Sectors such as health, industry and agriculture are favored through the usage of Hemp. The fiber provided by this plant can be long and strong, ideal for the making of paper. It is also very valid to point out that the usage of Hemp in the process of making paper has a lesser fuel expense and likewise, it does not create many harmful dioxins or chlorinated organic compounds usually linked to the wood paper process. For this reason, the usage of this plant provides human beings with benefits for everybody’s health. So far, it has been proven that its seeds’ treatment has substantial benefits as they lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, they improve the immune system, they speed up weight loss, they control blood sugar levels, among many other. Besides, Hemp seeds are being employed to produce energy in some developed countries. Unfortunately, the fact that Hemp does not have any psych-active properties is not a sufficient reason for those countries forbidding its utilization, production and commercialization. Hemp collection can be very beneficial for many tasks done in society. According to statistics from the United States Drug Administration, 1-3 hectares of wood would produce one ton of Hemp while for other plants to produce the same amount of fiber would need at least more than 5 hectares. This totally unnecessary expense can only be rectified if governments allowed the usage of Hemp to solve daily issues affecting human beings.
