  1. Furnace Repair Help – Know What to Do When You Have a Dead Furnace Even if you think you pay enough attention to keep your furnace functional, things can go wrong without a notice. The problem is that you sometimes have to wait for a technician to arrive and fix the issue. It can take a lot of time and living without a furnace during the winters can be quite difficult. Therefore, it is a good idea to educate yourself about how your furnace works to handle minor furnace repair problems on your own. One of most common issue that can be quite frustrating is to see your furnace quit. When the furnace refuses to work, it could be due to many underlying issues. In most cases, you can fix the problem by learning to check the thermostat. You would not have to call a furnace repair pro if you could check the thermostat properly. The furnace will not be turned on unless the thermostat tells it to. Therefore, you should not panic when your furnace stops working and simply check the thermostat first. Here are a few things to do: Be sure to check the thermostat carefully, especially if it is a programmable one. You have to ensure that the switch is not on "Cool" and is on "Heat" instead. Now, check the temperature setting. It is important to ensure the temperature setting of the thermostat is higher than the room temperature. Usually, it is enough to set the thermostat temperature five degrees higher than your room temperature. Making this change usually makes the furnace work again. If you do not get a functional furnace yet, you may have to check the program and ensure that it displays the right day and time. Check the thermostat wires carefully and ensure that they have no breaks. You are likely to find a break here if you have recently done some remodelling. Keep in mind that if you find a break even in one of those thin wires, the furnace may refuse to work. The good thing is that you can easily fix the wire though – just splice it back together and use some electrical tape to cover it properly. Another issue keeping the furnace from working efficiently is that you have a poor battery. In many cases, the thermostat setting will change to the default if you have a dead battery. Therefore, it is better to be on the safe side and change the battery. The thermostat may cause problems when there is dirt and debris in and around it. You need to clean it properly and also ensure that it is level on the wall. The fact of the matter is that it is natural to feel worried and panicked when your furnace stops working, but in many cases, you do not need to call a furnace repair pro because a little attention to the thermostat can fix the issue. If the problem persists, you may have no other choice but to ask a technician to check it for you.
