What is Storwize V5000? • A new “low-end mid-range” (band 4) block Storage Controller in the Storwize family: • Between V3700 and V7000. • Very similar hardware to V3700: • Enclosures look just the same except for MTM label. • Hardware config is mostly fixed – far fewer optional extras than V3700. Plan to support more extras later. • Same routes to market, product structure, entitlement as V7000: • System is configure-to-order by IBM, not assembled from pieces by the end user. • Sold as “software” not “machine code” • Software feature licensing is honor-based not key-based. • Unlike V3700: • No GMU/WW split; • No single-canister; • All features delivered in the same release.
High-performance thin provisioning simplifies and automates storage deployment for all workloads Easy Tier offers up to 3 times better performance with only 5 percent SSD FlashCopy creates instant copies of data for back up or application testing Advanced GUI reduces management effort up to 47 percent Storage virtualization enhances storage you already own Clustered systems provides the ability for block systems to both scale up and out for performance and capacity Benefits of the Storwize V5000
Base Function – Hardware • Atlantis control enclosure is 2U24 or 2U12. Two node canisters each with: • 2 1Gb/s ethernet ports (iSCSI and management) • 4 8Gb/s Fibre Channel ports • 8GB RAM • 2 6Gb/s SAS disk expansion port • 2 6Gb/s SAS host ports • 4-core Intel CPU (XEON 2.5 GHZ; V3700 is Celeron) • 2 USB ports for out-of-box, debug, emergency access • Battery (Apart from the different CPU, these are TB4 node canisters with the RAM upgrade and the FC HIC fitted.) • SAS and nearline-SAS HDDs, SSDs. • Up to six expansion enclosures per control enclosure, which can be 2U12 or 2U24. • Three expansions on each chain • So maximum seven enclosures, max 7*24=168 drives, per control enclosure. • Up to two control enclosures per clustered system • So total maximum 2 * 7 * 24 = 336 drives
Enclosure - Rear • Rear view of control: • 1 Node canisters • 2 Power supply units • Data ports in the rear of the control enclosure • USB port • Ethernet port • SAS port
Enclosure - Front • 1 Left end cap with enclosure indicators • 2 Drives (12 slots , 24 slots) • 3 Right end cap
Base Function – Software • Software RAID (0/1/5/6/10 with global spares and rebalancing) • Thin provisioning • Volume mirroring • Read/write cache • Volume and host limits per V3700 – 2048 volumes and 256 host objects per control enclosure etc. • Import volumes • External storage virtualization – like V7000 • Easy Tier – like V7000 • Remote Copy – like V7000 • Flash Copy – like V7000 • Embedded management and service GUIs, SMI-S compliant CIMOM • Management CLI over SSH • Dual system clustering • But requires quorum disk on virtualized external storage which requires a license.

Storwize V5000 Machine Types and Models • Flexible warranty assumptions: • “Flexible warranty” means the product is offered with a “1 year warranty” and “3 year warranty” and where the machine type defines the warranty period • Underlying product structure (model numbers and feature codes) is the same for both offerings, with the exception of solid state drives (SSD) which have 1 year warranty feature codes and 3 year warranty feature codes • Physical machine is the same for both offerings, except for unique machine type (product labels and VPD) • Supplier and manufacturing warranty (Celestica to IBM) is the same for both offerings • Model list price is unique on each offering (3 year models are higher priced than 1 year models) • Feature code list price is the same on both offerings, with the exception of SSDs which have unique pricing for each machine type • A Storwize V5000 “system” may be comprised of both machine types (i.e., the expansion enclosure machine type does not have to be the same as the control enclosure machine type)
Storwize V5000 Expansion Enclosures • Up to 6 expansion enclosures supported per each control enclosure • Up to 2 IO groups supported per cluster • Max drives : 2 * 7 * 24 = 336 • We are planning to add the 10GbE as a HIC option in 4Q.
