LAND BIOMES • TUNDRA • TEMPERATE FOREST • DECIDUOUS FOREST • GRASSLANDS/SAVANNA’S • DESERT • TROPICAL RAINFOREST
AQUATIC BIOMES • MARINE- OCEAN WATERS • FRESHWATER- LAKES, RIVERS, STREAMS
TUNDRA CHARACTERISTICS • COLD BARREN LAND WITH PERMAFROST (FROZEN SOIL) • LITTLE PRECIPTATION • LICHENS/MOSSES • FEW TREES IF ANY • ANIMALS MUST WITHSTAND LONG COLD PERIODS OF SEVERE TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING • SNOW OR ICE COVERED • POLAR BEARS, SEALS,PENGUINS,WALRUSES
TEMPERATE RAIN FOREST • COLD WET SEASON-LARGE AMOUNTS OF SNOW OR RAIN • LARGE EVERGREEN TREES • WARM SHORT SUMMERS • MOOSE, BEARS,WOLVERINES • FOUND ONLY IN THE NORTH WEST OF THE UNITED STATES
DECIDUOUS FOREST • VARIETY OF TREES THAT SHED THEIR LEAVES IN WINTER: OAK,MAPLE,PINE • HAVE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES • DEER, BEARS, MOUNTAIN LIONS,SQUIRRELS, RACOONS • THIS IS THE TYPE OF FOREST THAT IS IN NORTH CAROLINA
GRASSLAND-PRAIRIES • FOUND ONLY IN THE US • VAST OPEN LAND WITH TALL/SHORT GRASSES (FEW TREES) • HOT SUMMERS,COLD WINTERS • GRASSES HAVE DEEP ROOTS TO SURVIVE THE MANY FIRES • BISON, COYOTE,PRAIRIE DOGS • DRY/WET PERIODS OF WEATHER
DESERTS • HOT, DRY CLIMATE • CREASOTE TREES, SAQUARO CACTUS , TUMBLEWEED • SNAKES,TORTOISES, DESERT FOX,FINNEC FOX,CAMELS,CARACARA • ANIMALS HERE MUST ADAPT TO THE EXTREME HEAT AND ARID CLIMATE
TROPICAL RAIN FOREST • 7% OF THE LAND IS FOUND HERE • 50% OF ALL ANIMAL SPECIES ARE FOUND HERE • 200-400 INCHES OF RAIN PER YEAR • LOCATED IN THE EQUATORIAL REGIONS OF THE WORLD • MOST DIVERSE PLACE ON EARTH • PROVIDES US WITH WATER VAPOR AND OXYGEN TO OUR ENVIRONMENT
MARINE BIOME Marine region cover about three-fourth of the Earth’s surface. It includes oceans, coral reefs and estuaries(where salt water and fresh water meet) It is the largest biome. The evaporation of the seawater provide precipitation for the land.
FRESHWATER BIOME A freshwater biome is a body of water that contains little salt(less than 1%) 99% of all freshwater is either in the form of ice or located in aquifers. Freshwater biomes are subdivided into three groups: lakes and ponds, stream and rivers and wetland. Freshwater biomes are very importan to our survival because they supply people with more than half of their drinking water.
