  2. WHY WE BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE AS GOD’S WORD 1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  3. THE BIBLE IS A WONDERFUL BOOK • Highly esteemed by many... • “The Bible is endorsed by the ages. Our civilization is built upon its words. In no other book is there such a collection of inspired wisdom, reality, and hope.”- Dwight Eisenhower • “The New Testament is the very best book that ever was or ever will be known in the world.”- Charles Dickens • We are not ashamed to confess our own faith in the Bible... • As the Word of God • Written by men, who were inspired by the Spirit of God - cf. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 • But, what evidences are there to believe that the Bible is inspired of God?

THE UNIFORMITY OF THE BIBLE • THE BIBLE IS A COLLECTION OF 66 BOOKS... • Written over: • A period of 1600 years ; Over A span of 40 generations • Written by approx. 40 authors from every walk of life; e.g.: • Moses, a political leader trained in the universities of Egypt • Peter, a fisherman • Amos, a herdsman • Joshua, a military general • Nehemiah, a cup bearer to a king • Daniel, a prime minister • Luke, a physician • Solomon, a king • Matthew, a tax collector • Paul, a tentmaker and rabbi

THE UNIFORMITY OF THE BIBLE • Written in different places • Moses in the wilderness ; Jeremiah in a dungeon ; Daniel on a hillside and in a palace ; Paul inside prison walls ; Luke while traveling ; John in exile on the isle of Patmos • Others in the rigors of military campaign • Written at different times and during different moods • David in times of war, Solomon in times of peace • Some writing from the heights of joy, others from the depths of sorrow and despair • Written on three continents, and in three languages • Asia, Africa, Europe • Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek • Which subject matter includes hundreds of controversial topics • The origin of man & the universe • The nature of God • The nature of sin & man’s redemption

  6. THE UNIFORMITY OF THE BIBLE • YET THERE IS HARMONY AND CONTINUITY... • “The Paradise Lost of Genesis becomes the Paradise Regained of Revelation. Whereas the gate to the tree of life is closed in Genesis, it is opened forevermore in Revelation.” - Geisler and Nix • Compare the continuity of the Bible with any other such writings of man • Imagine what you would have if you just took ten authors... From one walk of life, one generation, one place, one time, one mood, one continent, one language, Speaking on one controversial subject: You would have a conglomeration of ideas, not harmony! • The reason for the unity of the Bible? • The writers were all inspired by the same God - cf. 2 Pet. 1:20-21 • Providing evidence that the Bible is the Word of God

THE SCIENTIFIC FOREKNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE • THE NATURE OF THIS ARGUMENT... • In the Bible there are scientific truths that... • Were unknown by man with all his wisdom and resources • Are stated as facts hundreds of years before their discovery by men • The writers of the Bible could have known these facts only through inspiration of God • A FEW EXAMPLES... • The roundness of the earth - Isa 40:22 • The suspension of the earth in space - Job 26:7 • The currents in the seas - Psa 8:8 • The springs in the seas - Job 38:16 • All nations of one blood - Acts 17:26

THE FULFILLED PROPHECIES IN THE BIBLE • THE NATURE OF THIS ARGUMENT... • Prophecies in the Old Testament foretold events in detail that were beyond the scope of human speculation • How did the writers do it? • They attributed it to God! • And God declared that such evidence was a proof of His existence and superiority over men and all heathen gods - Isa 41:21-24; 42:8-9; 46:8-11 • A FEW EXAMPLES... • The fall of Babylon, written two hundred years before it occurred - Isa 13:17-22 • The fall of Egypt, that it would be destroyed more by civil war than by outside forces - Isa 19:1-4 • The fall of Nineveh, with its utter desolation - Zep 2:13-15 • The fall of Tyre, with its becoming a place for the spreading of nests - Ezek 26:1-5

  15. ASTOUNDING EVIDENCE FOR THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE BIBLE • In the book “I believe because…”Batsell Barret Baxter introduced Mr Henry O. Taylor a Mathematician who suggests the odds which support the Bible to be genuine. • Mr Taylor suggests that the odds of just 25 Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah being fulfilled in one person are fixed at a one chance out of a thousand trillion (1/1,000,000,000,000,000) • The equation to support the Bible as truth with regard to the fulfillment of prophecies given in some cases over eight centuries before Jesus ever lived are: • Surmising that this to be a 1 in 5 probability of one prophecy being fulfilled by one particular man is – (n) being 25 and (p) being 1/5 = (1/) 25 or one out of one thousand trillion.

THE IMPACT OF THE BIBLE • ON INDIVIDUAL LIVES... • It has transformed the lives of millions of people • It has motivated them to be missionaries and martyrs • It has made them better spouses, parents, friends, neighbors, workers • Countless people would agree with the words of David - cf. In Conclusion… • The evidence for the Bible as the Word of God is both objective and subjective... • The objective evidence includes its unity, foreknowledge, and fulfilled prophecies. • The subjective evidence is seen in its impact on our lives and the world in which we live. • Do we really believe in and appreciate the Bible as the word of God...? • “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man.
