Eidetic/Visual Imagery Alex Dahm
Visual Memory • Visual memory is a part of memory preserving some characteristics of our senses pertaining to visual experience. We are able to place in memory information that resembles objects, places, animals or people in sort of a mental image. We can retrieve things from our “minds eye” or our memory a mental image of the original object, place, animal or person.
Eidetic Memory(As one of the 20 senses) • The Eidetic image is a bright, lively picture seen in the mind much like a movie image or a film strip. It is different from other types of mental images in its unusual clarity and its ability to reproduce important life events with exact detail. Through the Eidetic image, one can re-experience a life event with all of its basic elements intact: the visual image of the event, the physical and emotional feelings associated with it, and the meaning or significance it contains. These special images are neurologically recorded in the brain and systematically stored away for future reference. When recalled, the Eidetic image recreates a vivid experience of events and conflicts in a person's life with drama, clarity and detail.
Eidetic Memory(As A special Ability) • Produces a visual memory and “after image” in the mind that is similar to looking at a photograph. • Very Uncommon • More common in children than adults because adult’s larger conceptual and vocal capacity interferes with the observing and memory processes.
No Visual Memory • Result of brain damage • Can be specific to certain types of visual memory (faces etc) • Can recognize an image, but cannot recall it in some cases even secconds after.
Role in Art • Helps you recall the composition, shape, and colors of scenes from memories. • Your collection of visual memories specific to you makes art more interesting. • Having an eidetic image also helps your mind and body remember other senses you felt at the time subconsciously which can show through in your artwork. • Pay attention to the world around you like you did as a child!
