River Monitoring Solutions Antonio Candido
Agenda • Why river monitoring solutions • Key issues to be addressed • Environmental protection solutions • Early warning systems • Risk Management solutions
Why river monitoring solutions • Rivers are key recourse for any country • Source of potable water • Pollution control is key for proper water management • Navigation infrastructure • Water level control is key • Usually close from large population centers • Flood control is key to avoid catastrophes • Energy production
Key issues to be addressed • Rivers are spread up over a large area covering many kilometers • Access to data collection and control devices is the key in the solution architecture • Several alternative technologies exist. Technology selection criteria includes • Topology of area to be covered • Type of data in the network (e.g. monitoring only, active control, traffic size, interface types, etc.) • Existing infrastructure (e.g. terrestrial, Radio, Satellite). Comparative CAPEX and OPEX) • Knowledge of application domain is key to be able to understand the requirements • Has strong impact on the system architecture and application integration • Redundancy issues must be addressed
Environmental protection solutionsMain concerns • Pollution and water level monitoring is main concern • Usually low data traffic (bandwidth) • If CCTV is also included required bandwidth will be high where CCTV is required • Data transmission from reading devices (e.g. water level control) to the central control station. One way traffic. • Data Control Center processes the data collected and dispatches this data to other regional centers. • This data distribution can be done via the same satellite system and/or by an alternative system such as the telecom infrastructure. • The customer benefits of such solution is • Optimization of hydraulic resources regarding quality and quantity • Improve the security of Dams • Real time knowledge of hydraulic resources situation
RTU RTU RTU RTU Environmental protection solutionsLogical Network Data Acquisition Stations River basin Data network to connect all Data Acquisition stations to the control Center Data collection Network Control Center Data and Voice Network To interconnect the Control Center to the Operational centers. May also connect to Internet Data Distribution Network Operational Centers Control Centers may be located along the river and have control on Dams and Locks (not represented in this view)
RTU RTU Operation Center Operation Center Environmental protection solutionsSystem Architecture • System Architecture includes • Control Center where the data is captured and analyzed • Data Acquisition Stations with data acquisition devices and a point of transmission to the control center • Communication Infrastructure (e.g. Satellite network, FO, etc.) • Operation Centers that receive the data from the Control Center and dispatch the actions to the field. Along the river basin Dqtq collection Network Data Acquisition Devices Data Acquisition Station Data Acquisition Devices Control Center Telcom Network Data Acquisition Station
RTU Environmental protection solutionsData Acquisition Stations 1/2 • Data Acquisition Stations have 3 subsystems • Data acquisition devices - collect different type of information like temperature, water level and provide this information to RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) • Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) - store in local database the information received from acquisition devices and provide this information to communication system when requested by DCS (Data Collection Station) • Communication system provides the communication between the Control Center and the Data Acquisition station. Communication System Data Acquisition System Data Acquisition Devices Sensor 2 Sensor 1 Level Monitor CCTV Data Acquisition Station
RTU Environmental protection solutionsData Acquisition Stations 2/2 • Depending on network size and number of Data Acquisition Stations (DAS) the DCS may be located at the Control Center, or we may have several DCSs each controlling a group of DAS • The DCSs request the data from the RTU by polling Communication System Data Acquisition System Data Acquisition Devices Sensor 2 Sensor 1 Level Monitor CCTV Data Acquisition Station
VSAT Environmental protection solutionsData Collection Network Satellite Communications • Different technologies can be used • Using existing infrastructure (e.g. Utilities network, Telcos, etc.) • Satellite (e.g. VSAT) is area to cover is very large and no other transmission means is available • GbEthernet (or other technology like SDH) using FO laid out on the river bed (common technique used in Europe) • Microwave for short distances • Technology choice depends also on required bandwidth Control Center Ground Communications Data Acquisition Stations
Environmental protection solutionsControl Center • The main mission of Control Center (CC) is to collect the data from the Data Acquisition Centers, process these data and supply information to operation centers • Issues to be addressed • Data collection network with Data Acquisition stations • network topology and technology used • location of DCS • Data distribution network with Operation Centers • Usually uses the Telcos infrastructure VSAT CC Monitors Router Admin WS Servers Ethernet / PSTN network Radio network
