Air War • Operation Rolling Thunder: Bombing of North Vietnam. • Concentrated on the Ho Chi Minh Trail: Main network of supply lines for the Vietcong. • Used chemicals & napalm to defoliate the jungle. • Carpet bombing. • Goal was to weaken the Vietcong’s will & ability to fight. • It actually strengthened them. • China & the Soviets sent them more aid. • Many South Vietnamese joined the Vietcong.
Ground War • By 1967 there were 486,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam. • William Westmoreland: Commander of the U.S. troops. • Used search-and-destroy missions, a combination of ground troops & airstrikes. • Pacification: Used to keep the civilian pop. safe & supportive. • Failed because civilians didn’t like being moved from their homes.
Declining U.S. Troop Morale • Highly difficult war to fight: • Vietcong used guerilla style warfare. • Thick jungle terrain & harsh climate. • Hard to distinguish between friend & foe. • Vietcong knew the land. • Mines & booby traps. • Tunnels.
The U.S. Military • 2.5 million Americans served in Vietnam. • 80% had a high school education or less. • More U.S. soldiers were poorthan well to do. • A high percentage were African American. • A lottery system was used in the draft to promote more equity.
U.S. Public Opinion • Many Americans became negative towards the war. • Too many American casualties. • TV brought gruesome pictures of war into Americans’ homes. • 1st “living room war.” • Doves & hawks were critical of the war efforts. • The antiwar movement grew in the U.S. • Students for a Democratic Society: Very vocal antiwar group. • The antiwar movement included a diverse group of Americans.
