Low Population DensityShifting Cultivation • Low population density is Shifting Cultivation because; • It uses extensive areas of land to support a small number of people. • Low output per hectare so cannot support a large population. • Each person needs 1000s of hectares to survive- hunting and gathering, cultivation only makes up a small part of their food. • Poor soil fertility means that new clearings must be found, however to farm sustainable, long fallow periods are needed to maintain soil fertility. • Little labour required • High death rates, due to lack of access to healthcare • High incidence of disease, tribes a stage 1 of DTM. • Difficulty clearing and maintaining plots.
