  2. The Greek Gods Ancient Greeks believed in numerous gods that ruled the world. The belief of many gods is called polytheism. The most powerful and well known of these gods were called the Olympians. The reason that they were called this is because they resided on Mt. Olympus. These gods had numerous tasks, varying from fertility of crops to war, of flying the sun across the sky to managing the underworld. However the gods often behaved much like children, playing games with the humans and constantly bickering and tricking each other.

  3. The Olympians There were 13 Olympians overall. 12 of these resided on Mt. Olympus under the watchful eye of the king of the gods, Zeus. These were the most powerful and well known of the gods.

  4. Zeus Zeus in Greek mythology is the king of the gods, the ruler of Mt. Olympus, and the god of the sky and thunder. His symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull and the oak.

  5. Poseidon In Greek mythology Poseidon was the god of the sea, as well as horses, and he was called the “Earth Shaker” as well. He is commonly symbolized by the trident.

  6. Hades In Greek mythology Hades was the god of the dead. However, the underworld which he ruled was also called Hades. Hades is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon and collectively, these three rule over all the universe: underworld, sea, and sky.
