  2. Information about Merak  • Merak’s name means flank of the Great Bear • This star is located in the bottom right corner of the Big Dipper constellation • It is a White Main Sequence star and it’s sixty-two light years away!

  3. Another name for Merak is Tien Seunen. This name actually came from the Chinese. To the Greeks, this star was named Helike, one of their names to the whole constellation, Ursa Major.   4. Where Is Merak?? Merak is located in the bottom right hand corner of the Big Dipper.

  5. When and where to view? • You can find this star all year round in the Northern Hemisphere. • And the star is in the constellation Ursa Major.

  6. Brightness • Although it doesn’t seem like it, Merak is fifty times brighter than our sun!!! =D

  7. Magnitude • There’s two types of magnitude; absolute and apparent. • For Merak, it’s absolute magnitude is 0.41 • And for the apparent magnitude it is 2.34

  8. Temperature • Merak’s surface temperature is about nine thousand Kelvin

  9. The constellation Ursa Major contains the star Merakand many more. • These stars include: Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Dubhe, and Phecda.
