  1. EPD, Mixed BSSes, and Group RAs Authors: • Date:2014-07-17 Donald Eastlake, Huawei

  2. Abstract • This presentation describes one way to resolve a number of intertwined 802.11ak (GLK) questions. Donald Eastlake, Huawei

  3. Capabilities • GLK stations indicate they are GLK by including a GLK Information Element in Beacons, Probe Requestsand Responses, DMG Beacons, (Re)Association Requests and Responses, Mesh Peering Opens, and Mesh Peering Confirms. TDLS? • Capabilities/Options are indicated by bits/fields within the GLK IE, except that • Support of EPD is indicated by Capability Information Field bit 13 and DMG Capability Information Field bit 62. Donald Eastlake, Huawei

  4. Pairwise STA Communications • IBSS, PBSS, Direct Link, Mesh Peer, and Individually Addressed AP ↔︎ non-AP MSDUs are • EPD if both stations support EPD and • LPD otherwise. Donald Eastlake, Huawei

  5. Mixed BSSes • An AP may permit association of non-AP STAs regardless of their GLK or EPD support. • Such AP policy is indicated by two BSS membership selector values, indicating that support is required, one for GLK and one for EPD. Non-APs STAs attempting to associate in violation of the policy are rejected. • We should consider renaming the “Supported Rates” IE to be the “Supported Rates and BSS Membership Selectors” IE. Donald Eastlake, Huawei

  6. Group Addressed RAs • An AP uses LPD for MSDUs carried by MPDUs with Group Addressed RAs unless it requires associated non-AP STAs to support EPD, in which case it uses EPD for such MSDUs. • A GLK AP transmitting an MPDU with Group Addressed RA intended for GLK non-AP STAs shall use an RA constructed as shown on the following slide. Donald Eastlake, Huawei

  7. GLK Group RA • GLK APs send data MPDUs with a Group RA only using an RA constructed with a new TBD OUI. The lower 24 bits have additional information, including subsetting. Optionally, there could be support for a larger amount of subsetting information later in the frame. • GLK non-AP STAs ignore MPDUs with a Group Addressed RA not formed as above. • Open question: How can we be sure non-GLK STAs will ignore these MPDUs? 0x01TBD0 bits Donald Eastlake, Huawei
