Centers Management Group leadersand participants -Dr. Steve Katz • Director, NIAMS -Dr. Susana Serrate-Sztein • Director, Division of Skin and Rheumatic Diseases, NIAMS -Dr. Louise Rosenbaum • Science Policy Analyst, Office of Science Policy and Planning, NIAMS -Ms. Justine Buschman • Research Program Analyst, Division of Skin and Rheumatic Diseases, NIAMS Overarching question How can the NIAMS manage its centers awards to enhance success, productivity, cost-savings, and efficiency? 2008 NIAMS Scientific Retreat
NIAMS Centers • Purposes of NIAMS Centers Grants -Funding for infrastructure, translational, and clinical research projects which are not easily supported through investigator-initiated funding mechanisms -Initiatives to induce the development of projects in areas that the NIAMS is not receiving in investigator-initiated proposals • Types of NIAMS Centers -Research Core Centers (P30: infrastructure support for research in an NIAMS mission area) -Centers of Research Translation (P50: disease-specific, multi-project awards in translational research) -Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Centers (P60: generally, outcomes or epidemiology studies) 2008 NIAMS Scientific Retreat
Points of Consideration • Evaluation of centers -Instead of publication citations, the evaluation criterion is whether the effort is moving the field forward • Centers communications and interactions -Face-to-face meetings and regular teleconferences are valuable -Institutional distribution of pilot grants helps new investigators and formation of collaborations • Management of collaborative activities -Consortia develop around common scientific interests, shared resources, and funding -Investigators and institutions sometimes balance priorities between individual interests and collective efforts • Centers advisory committees -External advisory boards provide critical guidance to centers and NIH science officers -Decision-making power enhances engagement and effectiveness of advisory board members 2008 NIAMS Scientific Retreat
