  2. Background Information • Controlled by Belgium until its independence in 1960. • Located in Central Africa • Involved in Civil war from 1997 to 2007 • Over 5 million killed during the war, with 90% due to disease not combat. • 11th largest country in the world.

  3. Population • The current population of the Congo is estimated to be 75 million. • Natural Change- 1.714 million • Crude Birth Rate-44.9 per thousand • Crude Death Rate- 17.2 per thousand • Total Fertility rate- 6.07 per thousand • Infant Mortality Rate- 116 per thousand

  4. Education • In the Congo 65% of the total population are literate. • 75% of Males are educated. • 57% of females are educated.

  5. Issues Faced by Government A large percentage of the population has moved elsewhere. Much of its workforce is unable to work due to disease and injury. The government is largely corrupt Has a high infant mortality rate, with over 1/10 dying in infancy. Many atrocities still being commit to control the countries mineral resources
