According to a March survey by Ponemon Institute, 35 % of hiring managers use Google to check on job candidates, and 23 % look people up on social networking sites. About one-third of those web searches lead to rejections.
Social networks like Facebook can affect your job search and make you lose your job, or the possibility of employment. Before you post information or pictures on Facebook, make sure you watch what you are saying.
You should alsoremember who your friends are. If you accepted your boss as a friend, be careful about what you say or what you post. Even if your employer is not your friend in Facebook, your boss can see your pictures through your friends because there are many ways to find out information about you through Facebook.
So don’t post pictures of illegal behavior like drug use or alcohol abuse. Some also suggest that poor writing and bad grammar in Facebook profiles can raise a red flag about communication skills. Insulting comments or complaints or radical political positions also can call the attention of a prospective employer. One job applicant indicated in his Facebookprofile that he was a hacker, and he was applying to be a computer security analyst. Obviously, he didn’t get the job. In a real life case, this young man lost his job because of this picture he posted in Facebook.
In Switzerland, a woman was fired because she said she was sick, stayed home, but used Facebook during the day. In the USA a school suspended a teacher for posting, I am p… and I hate my students.
The next time you post on Facebook, remember that everyone can see what you post and that you can lose opportunities to get a job.
