Public Discussions/Private Stitch-Ups RTG Open IETF79 Stewart Bryant (stbryant@cisco.com)
IETF Mailing Lists • The IETF is an open (rough) consensus driven SDO. • The definitive method of determining consensus is via the IETF email lists. • The primary method of conducting technical debate is the IETF email lists. • So the question arises as to why there appears to be more use of private discussion within the IETF process. • The question then arises as to what we should do to encourage a more public technical debate.
Why Private Could it be: • Enter the debate with greater critical mass? • Uncomfortable making the point in public without checking with others? • Short private threads grow and grow through reply all? • No one takes the initiative to move the debate public? • Intimidation? • by aggressive respondents • By overly verbose respondents Comments Please?
What can we do about it? • Obviously police aggressive intimidation • Take the first move to move the discussion public (note the need NOT to forward private email) • Early request to take the discussion public • What else? Comments Please?
