  3. To Form a More Perfect Union • States needed to agree • to operate as a single country • to co-operate on major issues

  4. To Establish Justice • Provide a national system of courts to • Protect people’s right • Hear cases involving: • violations of federal laws • disputes between states

  5. To Insure Domestic Tranquility • Keep peace among the people • Provided by a strong Central Government

  6. To Provide for the Common Defense • Federal Government has the power to: • Maintain armed forces • to protect the country and its citizens • from attack

  7. To Promote the General Welfare • Well-being of the people by: • Maintaining order • Protecting individual liberties • Regulating commerce and bankruptcies • Promoting science and technology by granting patents

  8. To Secure the Blessings of Liberty Major goal of the Constitution Guarantees basic rights of Americans will not be taken away now or for posterity generations not yet born

  9. “We the People……….. • The Constitution has helped preserve • basic rights of American citizens • Goals listed in the Preamble are just as important today as they were when it was written over 200 years ago.
