Magnet Systems • Magnet Team • Asia – Ryuhei Sugahara, KEK • Americas – John Tompkins, FNAL • Europe – tbd (?) • Frascati Meeting indicated BINP, Russia • Need European member soon • Magnet contacts • Cost estimation approach • Key contributors • Cherrill Spencer, SLAC • Vladimir Kashikhin, FNAL Overview - jct
Charge to Magnet Systems • From RDR Charges 01-12-06 Magnet Systems: Responsible for the design and costing of all magnet systems (including cold magnets), and associated power supplies, interlocks, cabling, cable trays, supports (including He vessel for cold magnets), and movers. Interface to control system at a serial digital interface. Responsibilities include specialty magnets such as the final focusing magnets, kicker systems, and undulator systems. Overview - jct
Charge, cont. • Magnet systems responsibilities • Magnets • Conventional, permanent magnets • SC magnets • Cold mass, He vessel • Cryostat (not Cryomodule) • Power Leads (? Integrated with cryomodule in Main Linac?) • Quench protection leads (voltage taps) • Stands • Alignment • Stability • Movers • Fine (~’s) adjustments ? To this point, these are all obvious magnet-related items (Note: at FNAL, the Accelerator Division has typically had responsibility for the supports.) Overview - jct
Charge, cont. • Magnet systems responsibilities • Power supplies • Requirements will be passed to power supply groups – shouldn’t there be a Power Systems group here ? • This is not a magnet systems area of expertise • Power systems require additional infrastructure • We should define (based on Area Systems input) power supply requirements • Current • Voltage • Number of magnets in a string • Bus lengths Overview - jct
Charge, cont. • Interlocks • Magnet protection • Coolant flows • LCW • LHe, etc. • Voltage • Temperature • Input to controls system • Personnel protection • Cabling & Cable Trays • Specify requirements • Cable trays and routing should be part of the overall tunnel infrastructure Overview - jct
Activities • Contact with (almost) all Area Systems • Magnet lists from BDS, RTML, Main Linac, Sources, Damping Rings • Differing levels of detail • Some interesting design issues • A large number of magnet types • Setting up additional meetings with Area Systems Leaders and teams to discuss details • Distributed a preliminary ‘input needed’ spreadsheet to Area Leaders • Need feedback on what they can supply • Develop contacts for specific issues Overview - jct
Magnet Input • magnet design/cost input • draft by Spencer, Sugahara, Tompkins Overview - jct
Magnet Input, cont. Etc.,.. Overview - jct
Magnet Input, cont. • A few comments • The dreaded field quality request… • We typically specify the field in terms of an harmonic expansion in terms of ‘units’ where a unit is 104 * (Bn/Bfund)*rn-1; r is the reference radius (2/3 of the aperture: Tollestrup) • Typically, field quality at the 10-3 is not considered challenging – but as cost is paramount, we will need to (re-)evaluate fabrication techniques for sensitivity • Alignment • We assume ~200-300 installation tolerances for position • SC magnets in cryostats present challenges • Stability over thermal cycles • Stability with excitation • Stability w/res to powering history Overview - jct
Closing Comments • As stated earlier, magnets are 6% of the total project cost… • However, there are (as yet untabulated) hundreds of different magnets required • We will have to concentrate on the more challenging requirements and use existing estimates (suitably modified/updated) for most • NLC work • Tesla • Other machines – e.g., Recycler, Main Injector • We need to identify more people – one per area is required, at a minimum • We need to figure out how to deal with design requests within the time scale and resources… Overview - jct
