  1. Earthquakes

  2. Introduction • An earthquake occurs when two blocks suddenly slip past each other . • The surface where they slip is called the fault or the fault plane • The place below the earths surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter and the place directly above the surface of the earthquake is called the epicenter

  3. Causes • The earth has four major layers : the inner core, the outer core, mantle and the crust . • The crust and the top of the mantle make up a thin skin of the surface of the earth , but it is not all one piece – it is like a puzzle made out of lots of pieces moving around slowly, these pieces are called tectonic plates and when they push against each other an earthquake occurs .

  4. A lot of the earthquakes occur in oceanic and continental places such as Asia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Oceania and Costa Rica
