Institut St Louis St Clément • I work in a privateschooljustoutside of Paris, whichiscalled St Louis St Clément. • It has a collège (secondaryschool) and a lycée (sixthform), and islinkedwithseveralother sites in the area. • The collège isverybig, witharound 30 pupils in each class and 7 classes in a year. • The collège ranges fromsixieme (Year 7) to Trosième (Year 9)
Le Lycée • The Lycée isslightlysmaller, witharound 25 pupils in a class. • Ratherthanbeingdividedjust by year group, pupils are put intostreams or ‘filières’ whichdeterminewhatsubjectsthey do. • For example: • Baccalauréat de sciences et technologies du management et de la gestion; STMG • Baccalauréat économique et social; ES • Baccalauréat littéraire; L • Pupils cannot just choose what subjects they want to do, unlike British A levels.
Stages of School • Here are the stages of French schoolwhich a pupildrew for me. Can youwork out all the levels?
Organisation of the school • The French schooldayismuch longer than the British one. • Atmyschool, lessonsstartat 8.45 and end at 16.45, although if pupils have an afterschool slot theywill finish at 17.40! • Howeverthere are twobreaktimes and pupils have free periodsthroughout the daystartingfromYear 7.
Differences • Overallschool life in the UK and France israthersimilar. Weboth have lots of lessons and homework, with Exams in May and June. • Howeverpupilsherecan wear theirownclothes, and thereis more freedom in terms of leavingschoolearly. There is a canteen and a tuck shop, as well as a common room for Lycée students. • Overall I feelpupils are given more responsablity over theirownwork and grades, as the emphasisis on them to succeed. There are often more frequent tests in French schoolstoo.
