  11. When should I be concerned? • Feelings Interfering with your life • Feels out of your control • Difficulty with normal activities • Change in personality • Unable to control emotions and behavior • Unable to handle life's challenges

  12. Mental Illness • A medical condition of the mind that disrupts normal thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and day to day functioning. • Must be diagnosed by a doctor!

  13. Interesting Facts • About half of U.S. adults will develop a mental illness sometime in their lives. • Mental illness can begin at any age, from childhood through later adult years.

  23. How do you get a mental illness? • Genetics • Head Injury • Brain Chemistry • Drugs • Life situation/stress • Exposure to viruses, toxins, alcohol or drugs while in the womb • Traumatic Events

  24. What should I do? • Talk to your parents or another adult you trust • Talk with your guidance counselor • See a doctor, psychiatrist and/or psychologist

  27. Anxiety Disorder • Continuous fear and worry about things that may or may not be real • May be accompanied by physical symptoms such as stomach pain “butterflies” and headaches
