Useful and Not Useful Friction USEFUL: This is a car that is breaking and cars rely on friction to slow down. The friction slows the wheel and bring the car to a stop. NOT USEFUL: When a smooth surface (eg. Wet road of a wet footpath) surface and another smooth surface are sliding on each other there is not much friction causing someone to fall of something to slide. USEFUL: This is a pole with grip on it and this is a rough surface and when combined with a smooth surface (eg a hand) there is a lot of friction therefore the pole is not dropped.
Reducing Friction By putting oil in a car it creates less friction as there is less ‘grip’. By scrubbing away on the rough ice the amount of friction is reduced.
