Have you ever entered something in the text input box of a search engine, or, have you submitted your username and password on the login page of a social media website? When was the last time you filled an online form? Have you ever played an online game? I need no superpowers to know that you already did, or will do, at least one of the above-mentioned things today itself! If you have ever been helped, benefited, or amused by these actions, then you certainly have this technology - JavaScript - to thank. So, what is common amongst all these actions? It is the allowance provided to the user to bring about some change in the web page, also known as responsiveness of the web page, or, simply, dynamic nature of it. Such features of a website make it more interactive for the user.

To develop a website that is responsive to user's input, an object-oriented, client-side scripting language is used, known as JavaScript, which was originally developed by the company called Netscape. JavaScript enables you to interact with the web page by bringing about the above mentioned changes and more, as we shall see in the next section. It is commonly said that JavaScript, along with the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) form the core of the World Wide Web. What features does JavaScript offer? Deciding the behaviour of pages: As is clear from the above discussion, JavaScript allows the developer to decide that how a page should respond to the various inputs given by the user. This enables you to input text in text fields, like a search query in a search engine, filling online forms, logging into your accounts by entering your username and password and playing games online. Compatibility and Open Sourcing: If you have a habit of aimlessly wandering around the settings of your browser, then you probably would have encountered an option to “enable or disable JavaScript”. The language is compatible with every browser as they have an inbuilt JavaScript engine, and its cross platform nature allows it to be run on any operating system. Also, since it is open-source language, it can be used without having the need of a specific licence. Ubiquitousness: JavaScript is used rigorously by almost every website and web technology, such as AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript + XML) used to send and receive data in the background without interfering with the display and behaviour of the existing page.

  3. Lightweight: Albeit network centric, JavaScript has minimal server interaction which directly implies lesser load, leading to faster processing and richer interactivity. Ease of Validation: If you have ever filled an online form, odds are that you often been notified of an error in the input entries before submitting your details. Such data entries are instantly checked for validity, and given immediate feedback to, using JavaScript itself. Why should you learn JavaScript? The answer is quite simple and straightforward. JavaScript is an essential building block of the Internet. And if you are eyeing a career in web development or web design, then this is an indispensable skill that you would not want to be missing in your profile. Apart from that, learning JS will also open several other possibilities for you, including AJAX, jQuery and NODE.JS. Having learnt JavaScript along with the skills of HTML and CSS, you stand a far higher chance of increasing your employability. Moreover, if you want to build and publish your own website or a web blog, this is one skill that you should, ideally, possess.
