Who Owns the Artefacts? • There is a huge black market in the sale of illegal antiquities. • Who owns the artefacts that come from a dig? This is an important question, especially when dealing with priceless items. • Thousands of artefacts have been smuggled out of the original homeland and are now in museums around the world. • Should these items be returned to their homeland?
Famous examples of “stolen” artefacts • Heinrich Schliemann and the treasures of Troy: • Schliemann smuggled “Priam’s Gold” out of Turkey • It was in the Imperial Museum of Berlin, but taken by the Russians during WWII • It is now in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow
