  1. Final Challenge #3 Eco Dudes Tate J., Connor W., Jacob P., Sam L., Gabe F. Charles City Middle School Charles City, Iowa

  2. Part 1: What’s the environmental issue? For our topic we decided to educate people about actions they can take to lead a more green lifestyle. We felt that this information would benefit people not only within but beyond our community. We selected this topic because we felt that by educating people about a wide range of green options in their daily lives we would be able to affect more change as our audience would be able to select the topics most useful to them. We decided to address a variety of topics all relating to an eco-friendly home and how to live a green lifestyle. We focused our information campaign on the following five topics: • How to Compost • Water and Energy Conservation • Carpooling • Buy Fresh, Buy Local • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

  3. Part 2: What’s your action plan? • Step-by-step Actions • Each member selects a topic to research and becomes an expert about • Begin development of our website and work on workshop presentations • Publicize our Live Green Workshop we are hosting through local, regional, and statewide media outlets as well as on our website • Host the Live Green Workshop on March 9th • Participate in the Earth Day Activities sponsored by the DNR on April 17th and at Pfizer Animal Health on April 25th

  4. Part 2: What’s your action plan? (cont’d) • Specific responsibilities • Tate—Water and Energy Conservation Expert, Press Releases • Gabe-Carpooling Expert, Website Development • Sam--Buy Fresh, Buy Local Expert, Website Development • Jacob—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Expert, Action Plan • Connor--How to Compost Expert, Action Plan

  5. Part 2: What’s your action plan? (continued) We will measure success by the comments and feedback we receive on our website. We feel that it is important to know what people think about the information we give them and respond in a timely fashion to questions and suggestions that are given to us. We will also measure success by the results of surveys that we give and any comments we may receive on those surveys.

  6. Part 2: What’s your action plan? (continued) • How will you quantify impact? • Number of hits on our website • Attendance at our Live Green Workshop • Results of surveys given to our middle school staff members both before and after they viewed our website in order to determine the effectiveness of our website • Results of survey given to our Live Green Workshop participants both before and after the workshop in order to determine the effectiveness of our workshop • Number of hits on our YouTube Video

  7. Part 3: How did you implement your ideas? • Our team developed a website and we hosted the Live Green Workshop to educate people about leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle. • The community event we organized was the Live Green Workshop, hosted in the Charles City Middle School Library. At this event we had reusable shopping bags, light bulbs, green cleaners, and seeds to give away to the participants.

  8. Part 3: Implementing Ideas (cont’d) Eco Dudes worked hard to build partnerships beyond our school for this project. We contacted Fern Hollow Cabin to ask for the tips found under Expert Tips on our website. We also partnered with local businesses such as Pfizer Animal Health and the DNR to participate in their Earth Day activities. We were able to obtain some green cleaning products and light bulbs from local vendors. All the materials for the composter that was built for the Live Green Workshop were donated by Swartzrock Implement.

  9. Part 3: How did you implement your ideas? (cont’d) • How we spread our message: • Created an informational website • Posted our video on YouTube • Went on the local radio station twice to spread our message • Sent press releases to the local paper (Charles City Press), regional TV station (KIMT), and the statewide newspaper (Des Moines Register) • Hosted “Live Green Workshop” and handed our informational packets • Announcementswere made informing staff and students at the middle school about our Live Green Workshop • E-mails were sent to all district staff members informing them of our Live Green Workshop and our website

  10. Part 3: How did you implement your ideas? (cont’d) • www.ecodudes.yolasite.com • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JON0U6pESrQ

  11. PART 4: Evaluate your plan. What are the results? • We feel our plan was successful because we were able to have good attendance at our Live Green Workshop, we had a high number of hits on our website, and we received favorable feedback on our website comment page. All of these lead us to feel that our message was well received and understood. • The challenges we faced were primarily the time constraints involved with five team members who are also involved in a wide variety of other extra-curricular activities. • We raised awareness in our school and the greater community by providing information through a wide variety of sources. We utilized the local newspaper, radio station, state newspaper ,our own website, and YouTube. We also hosted the Live Green Workshop and handed out informational brochures. • From this experience we learned that with effort we truly can impact a large number of people and can reach them with our message of eco-friendly living. This has encouraged us to continue trying to reach people with our message even after the Final Challenge is over.

  12. Part 4: Evaluate your plan. What are the results? • Results of our outreach on YouTube, our website, and our workshop expressed in actual number

  13. Part 4: Evaluate your plan. What are the results? Example of Pre-Website Viewing Survey Example of Post-Website Viewing Survey • After viewing our website would you now consider buying locally produced food as often as possible? • Do you make efforts to buy locally grown or produced food? For complete survey results, please visit our website.

  14. What will your team/school/teacher advisor do with their winnings? • Team: If we win, we all plan to use the money to increase our college fund. • School: Our school has recently installed motion sensor lights in some hallways and we would like to see more green initiatives implemented. We would encourage the school to install more motion sensor lights, water saving urinals and sinks, or to start a garden with a compost area to be used to provide the Family and Consumer Science class with fresh food to cook with. • Teacher advisor: If we win Mrs. Pittman plans to use the money to provide supplies for her classroom, take continuing education course, and spruce up her classroom to make it a more welcoming and inviting place for students to learn in.
