“Mightiest Aquatic Predator” • The Liopleurodon was considered the mightiest aquatic predator of all time. • It’s long, slender body allowed it to coast discretely through shallow seas during the late Jurassic Period. • The Liopleurodon enabled itself to propel through the shallow seas by flapping its large flippers. http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us/plio.mov
Hunting • The Liopleurodon was an omnivore, eating both meats and plants. • Its long jaw and rows of needle-sharp teeth enabled it to be a primary predator. • The Liopleurodon’s nose enhanced it’s ability to smell underwater, therefore being able to smell its prey from long distances.
Facts • The Liopleurodon was part of a group of short-necked plesiosaurs that became the pliosaurs. • The head of the largest Liopleurodon to be discovered was thirteen feet long with a ten foot jaw. • The teeth of Liopleurodons were twice the size of those of a T-Rex.
