  1. Biofuels & Biomass – Our renewable energy future Biofuels Market - South East Europe23 October 2007Sofia, Bulgaria Kathleen Bryan President BBI International

  2. BBI International • BBI International is committed to the responsible growth of the biofuels and biomass industries worldwide • Founded in 1995 by Mike Bryan and Kathy Bryan • Today - 115 full-time employees • BBI International Groups: • Conference & Event Planning - Salida, CO • Media - Grand Forks, ND • Project Development - Lakewood, CO • Two International Offices: • BBI Biofuels Canada; Kitchener, Ontario • BBI Biofuels Australia; Brisbane, Queensland

  3. BBI Media Group • The BBI Media Group produces a variety of industry-related publications, including: • Ethanol Producer Magazine • Biodiesel Magazine • Biomass Magazine • Distillers Grains Quarterly • Biofuels Australasia • Biofuels Canada • Ethanol & Biodiesel Plant Development Handbooks • Industry Directories and Plant Maps

  4. BBI Conference & Event Group • BBI’s International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo is the largest ethanol conference in the world. • 2007 – 5,300 attendees, 550 exhibitors. • Focus is on technology • 2008 June 16-19, Nashville, TN

  5. BBI Conference & Event Group List of other conferences available Conferences held in USA, China, Canada, Australia, India, Thailand

  6. BBI Consulting Group • A leading biofuels consulting company with more than 200 renewable energy projects in our portfolio • Expertise in emerging renewable energy technologies for the production of biofuels, power and chemicals from lignocellulosic feedstocks • Expertise in project development and project financing • Expertise in ethanol production from starch, sugar and cellulose; and biodiesel production from oilseed and animal fat feedstocks

  7. BBI Consulting Group • Services provided • Complete Project Development services: • Feasibility studies, site and resource assessments • Business plans and market analyses • Strategic planning • Technology assessment and selection • Assistance with project financing • Owner’s engineering representative

  8. BBI Consulting Group • Bank engineer representative and project due diligence • Economic impact studies • Industry surveys • Market analyses • Feedstock assessments • Country evaluations

  9. BBI Biofuels Canada andBBI Biofuels Australia • Our current international offices operate with full staffing to provide BBI International’s broad range of services: • Conference & Event Planning • Publishing • Consulting, Project Development, Feasibility Studies • The same strategy will apply as well to offices we locate in other countries

  10. BBI Biofuels Australia • Established in February 2006, BBI has employed 9 staff in Australia located in Brisbane and Melbourne. BBI is mirroring the business segments in the company in the USA. • Conferences - Ethanol 2006, Ethanol 2007 and Ethanol 2008 is in Sydney in April 2008. • Publishing - Biofuels Australasia - first edition released in April 2007 • Projects – Four Ethanol feasibility studies completed, 2 more in preparation and three project development agreements agreed or being negotiated. • The Australian office in Brisbane is the base for servicing BBI business development into the Australasian, and the South and East Asian markets.

  11. Why Biofuels? • Globally we must change from a Carbon Economy to a Carbohydrate Economy • It is becoming more clear that is now urgent that we make changes soon

  12. Why Biofuels? • The primary drivers for Ethanol have always been… • Energy Security • Environment • Economic Development This also holds true for Biodiesel.

  13. Biodiesel

  14. Biodiesel in the US

  15. Biodiesel Plants in US

  16. Fuel Ethanol

  17. World Fuel Ethanol Production

  18. Fuel Ethanol Plants in US

  19. The Future - Ethanol from Biomass Corn Stover Switchgrass Poplar Paper

  20. Biomass Ethanol • Gasification/catalytic conversion of syngas to ethanol • Gasification/fermentation • Enzymatic hydrolysis/fermentation • Acid/base hydrolysis/fermentation

  21. Cellulose Ethanol Pilot Plants • Canada - Iogen – Demonstration plant in operation, negotiating for best site • Spain - Abengoa – 5 million liter/year cellulosic plant in Europe with a 200 million liter/yr barley to ethanol plant • China – China Resources Ethanol, Harbin, China • USA - Abengoa – corn stover pilot plant in York, NE • USA - DuPont – developing corn stover to chemicals technology

  22. Cellulose Ethanol Pilot Plants • USA - Cargill-Dow – PLA plant in Blair, NE using wet mill sugars; working on biomass as sugar source • Japan - Arkenol and JGC – BlueFire Technologies plant in Izumi, Japan • USA - Williams/Purdue University– Conversion of fiber in DDG to ethanol

  23. Biomass Ethanol • Biomass ethanol is aggressively being developed (5-10 years) • This will ease pressure on grain demand in the years ahead • Major portion of ethanol produced from cellulose within next 15-20 years • Increase in grain prices acts as an incentive to move towards biomass • Some likely cellulose feedstocks are poplar trees and field residues

  24. Biomass Utilization • Fuels – like biodiesel, fuel ethanol, biogas • Chemicals – chemical intermediataries • Heat & Power – gasification, anaerobic digestion
