Freshman Year • College may seem far away, but now is the time to get on the right track. • Challenge yourself academically and aim for high grades • Join sports, clubs, councils, church, volunteer, internships, etc. • Get to know your teachers and counselors (for letters of recommendations) • A-G requirements • Core Courses:
Good Grades…. Honor Roll (YAY!) • GPA 3.0-3.5 (good) • GPA 3.6-4.0 (great) • Advanced Level Classes (Honors, Advanced Placement, Community College courses) Benefits of Adv. Level Classes…… • Improves GPA • College level material • Potential College Credit • Why good grades? • Increase College Choices • Financial Aid (Scholarship & Grant Opportunities) Parents, be a part of the registration process when kids choose their courses
Sophomore Year • PSATs: practice • Some high schools partner with outside agencies for free PSAT courses (ask counselor) • Public libraries: free test prep materials • Test Prep institutes& online ($) • Tests to keep in mind for Junior Year • SAT (Revised) • ACT (East Coast colleges) • SAT Subject Tests Talk to counselor.
Junior Year • SAT/ACT: take at least twice (fee waivers available) • SAT Subject Tests • Keep grades high this year • Talk to counselor • Visit College Campuses (consider Ivy League Schools) • Summer Internships, Work Experience • Summer School at Community Colleges (some are free, Citrus College) • Begin working on your Personal Statement for College Applications • FAFSA estimate of federal financial aid eligibility (fafsa4caster.ed.gov)
Senior Year • Stay consistent with your extracurricular activites • Letters of recommendations (attach resume, brag sheet) • College Visits (Fall) • Personal Statement Essay • FAFSA (opens in October…NEW) • College Applications; apply early (Sep/Oct) • SAT/ACT (retake Oct/Nov) • Scholarship Opportunities (questbridge.com, fastweb.org, HSF.net) • Don’t procrastinate with application deadlines!!!! Parents, keep your child on track.
