February • Germany declares unrestricted submarine warfare
Germany believed that by attacking any ships coming in-or-out of Britain, they could starve Britain and force them to surrender.
March 15th • Tsar Nicolas II abdicates the throne in Russia due to revolt • Provisional government put in place • Government keeps Russia in the war. MISTAKE.
April • French launch offensive to end war • Gained: 500 yards • Lost: 250,000 casualties • French troops begin to mutiny
April • Still divided on neutrality, but more calling for the US to get involved in the war • 02 April 1917 -Wilson asks Congress to declare war on Germany and the Central Powers • 06 April – Congress declares war
May • The draft begins in the United States and troops are sent to the Western Front. • This flyer comes from Oregon. Note – no excuses for failure to register, but not all were drafted…
June • Alexander Kerensky supports a weak offensive in Galicia (modern day Ukraine) • RESPONSE: More people support the Bolshevik Party • Communists • Led by: Vladimir Lenin • Over the summer and fall, the Bolsheviks gain more and more power
October… revolution in November • Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik party overthrow Kerensky on November 7th. • Nearly a bloodless coup because the army supported the Bolsheviks
December • December 3, Germans and Russians begin talks to establish an armistice, or peace treaty. • December 9, the British capture Jerusalem from the Turks.
