Effects Continued B. Erosion • Erosion is the movement of rock particles by • Wind, water, ice, gravity. 2. Weathering and erosion work together to change (wear down) earths surface.
II. Types of Weathering A. Mechanical Weathering 1. Mechanical weathering is when rock is physically broken down into smaller pieces. • Freezing and thawing, • heating and cooling, • growth of plants, • animal actions, • abrasion of rock surface. 2. This process works very slowly
Types of Weathering cont’d B. Chemical Weathering 1. Chemical weathering is the breakdown of rocks through chemical changes provided by: a. water- dissolves minerals in the rocks b. oxygen- rusts the iron in some rocks ( oxidation) c. Carbon dioxide- creates carbonic acid that dissolves rock d. Acid rain- rapidly weathers rocks. (from pollution) e. Living things- roots of plants release weak acids
III.Rate of Weathering A. Depends of two factors 1. Type of Rock a. Rock with minerals that dissolve easier in water weather faster b. Permeable (holes) rock weathers faster 2. Climate the rock is in. • Faster in wet climates • Faster in warmer climates
