  3. OBJECTIVES • To empower women • To increase community participation in service delivery • To create a clean and green city • To improve the standard of infrastructure and sanitation in the city • To enhance safety for women and children 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

BACKGROUND • Women in male dominated fields (Procurement 2 , fire Brigade 3 in 2012, now 9, management 5 in 2012 and 12 presently.  • Established Gender Structure • Cleanest town, solid waste management • Improved road network with over 58 kilometres of road constructed and refurbished, more drainage, pavements, • street lighting(7 roads) • Tree planting

KEY ACTIVITIES • Street lighting of roads in the city and compounds. • Street cleaning and stoppage of vending . • Construction of police posts • Road, Drainage construction and maintenance. • Pavement creation along the main roads. • Skills training of women within the institution and in the community. • Increasing the number of women at both management and lower levels. • Employing more women in fields ordinarily considered to be male dominated such as fire brigade. • Engaging women in solid waste management. • General Infrastructure development 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

  15. CHANGES AT HOUSEHOLD LEVEL • “I am a divorcee with three children. Since I started working as a street cleaner, I am able to feed my children and take them to school without struggles.   17. CHANGES IN ATTITUDES • Street vending reduced by at least 90%.   • “It is not good for the whole City to be congested. I am happy that we were moved to one place. LESSON LEARNED AND INNOVATION • Men and Women Complement each other. • Dialogue and community participation is key for development. • Women empowerment and poverty reduction at household level. • More needs to be done( workshops, WDCs) LEARNING AND SHARING WITH OTHER COUNCILS • Nakonde Council • Kabwe/Chinsali Council 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION • Continued involvement of stakeholders and community participation. • Help communities can grasp the tenets of the SADC protocol on Gender and Development. • Consultation with women  • Cascade to other councils through exchange programme • Submission of articles in Local Government Newsletters.  • Furthermore, Chalimbana College should be engaged to work hand in hand with Gender Links to Introduce a Gender mainstreaming course for local authorities. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA
