B.I.G. N.O.S.E Basic Inexpensive Grid for Networking and Operating SystemsExperiments Timothy R. Brown Suny Oneonta
What is BIG NOSE? • Operating System and Networking workbench consisting of • Four Ethernet Local Area Networks (LAN) each containing a variety of • Operating Systems • Software • Hardware • Client/Server Functionality • Easily unconnected from the campus network to ensure no interference with campus-wide network security and service • Absolutely NO administrative restraints on any users
Why is BIG NOSE Necessary? • Computer Science students require absolutely unrestricted access to operating systems and networks if they are to be well trained. • Campus laboratories always restrict student access to computer networking and operating system functions. • It is the Computer Science student who will, in the future, write the software and administration functions that are out of his or her reach in general purpose laboratories. • In order to truly understand the functionality of a network or operating system, one must experiment with it. This includes modifying it and rebuilding it.
BIG NOSE Configuration • Four Local Area Networks connected in series named: • Donovan • Larkin • Merilan • Greenberg • Each LAN contains four Hosts named: • Donovan – Captain1, Captain2, Captain3, Captain4 • Larkin – Captain1, Canal1, Canal2, Canal3 • Merilan – Canal1, Voyager1, Voyager2, Voyager3 • Greenberg – Voyager1, Yukon1, Yukon2, Yukon3 • Captain1, Canal1, and Voyager1 are multi-homed hosts.
