TECHNIQUES / PERFORMANCE PLANNING OF AN EXPERIMENT PREPARE IN ADVANCE (study lab manual) LAB NOTE BOOK (use empty pages in lab manual and have it signed) Write your name on your lab manual ESTIMATE TIME REQUIRED CONSULT DEMONSTRATOR GLASSWARE / EQUIPMENT SYNTHETIC TECHNIQUES PURIFICATION ANALYSIS / PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
SAFETY Never work alone Keep lab tidy Use safety goggles, lab coat and gloves Never eat or drink in lab Always use fume hood Use chemicals with care Use glassware with care Dispose chemical waste in halogene rich / poor Before starting an experiment Consult risk assessment Check chemical hazards Check experimental set-up Be prepared!!!!!!!! Before leaving the lab Clean up your fume hood and bench (must be checked by a demonstrator)
ANALYSES • melting point / boiling point • Refractory index • Gas chromatography • IR • UV • NMR • Mass spectroscopy • Optical rotation • Literature data
REPORTING Lab NOTEBOOK Date / title experiment Reaction equation Data reagents literature references Description experiment and observations Analytical data Lab notebook should be kept during experiments according to example in manual and signed off by demonstrator. Note your observations so we can track back what happened!!!
REPORTING Report Title Summary Introduction Results Discussion Experimental section References Report should be handed within one week after finishing experiment. You can not start a third experiment if you have not submitted first report. Final deadline for last report is Friday 17.00 pm week 12
ASSESSMENT THEORETICAL INSIGHT PRAKTICAL SKILLS ACCURACY REPORTING Marking of experiments: mark out of 100 in increments of 5% will be given based on the following criteria: Accuracy, quality and yield of samples 30 % Quality of spectra recorded / Mpts 20 % Comprehension, equations, calculations 10 % Observations, spectra interpretation 20 % Report quality 20 %
